My entrance into manhood had been marked not only by my lavish ideals and unrealistic sense of virtue, but also by a darker longing, a desire for that which was forbidden. It was during this time that I met Dryden. He was older than myself by ten years, and never seemed to let me forget it. We shared a passion for literature, lore and the arts. But most of all, we shared a love for the arcane. Thinking back on it now I am certain that without these similarities, nothing would have been as it was for us. I had found in him a friend, and someone with whom I might discuss all of my innermost desires. He was different than the fools I had become accustomed to all my life. We understood one another, we connected. And when we talked, we talked for hours of great mysteries and forgotten lore as we walked under the light of moon and star during those timeless autumn nights…
Who would have thought that in five years time he would be gone? Certainly not I. Certainly not the passionate youth full of hopes and dreams that I once was. We were going to change the world together. It was our promise. After the academy we were to set our plans in motion and all the world would be forever different, forever thankful. We saw the flaws that existed in society and the injustice that ran rampant in the ruling elite. We would stand for it no longer. Both of us had agreed fervently that truth and justice must prevail at all costs. For what worth is a life if it never knows truth? That is the question we asked ourselves in those days, and it is the same question that plagues me now even as I wander alone. My ideals darkened, it is true after he left, but extinguished they were not. Those embers glow as they ever did, smoldering in the dark recesses of my heart; awaiting the day when they might burst again into boundless flame. And now Dryden… you have shown me where your loyalties lie. If Asmodian soil is where you choose to walk now…then it is there that we shall meet again someday as foes that once chose to live as friends.
